Most common causes

  • Steam from showers or cooking: the top false trigger in QLD homes.
  • Humidity: our wet season alone can set off a sensitive alarm.
  • Dust and renovations stir up particles the sensor reads as smoke.
  • Insects nesting in the chamber, common in warmer months.
  • Placement: too close to a bathroom door or cooktop nuisance-trips.

Try this first

  1. 01Vacuum around the alarm to clear dust and insects.
  2. 02Run exhaust fans and open a window when showering or cooking.
  3. 03Note if it only triggers with showers, cooking or humidity: that's the cause.
  4. 04Check the alarm's age; near 10 years old, it grows more sensitive.

When to call an electrician

Still triggering after cleaning and ventilation? It may be poorly positioned, ageing or faulty. We can reposition it away from the steam while keeping it compliant, or replace an oversensitive unit. In an interconnected system, it's worth finding the real culprit.
