How often does a smoke alarm need to be replaced in QLD?

Every smoke alarm must be replaced before it is 10 years old, measured from the manufacture date printed on the back of the unit, regardless of whether it still appears to work. Alarms that fail a test or won't stop chirping are replaced sooner.

What's included

Testing, cleaning or replacement: which do you need?

Most visits need a mix of all three. Testing proves an alarm works; cleaning stops it false-alarming on Queensland humidity and insects; and replacement is required once an alarm is faulty, damaged, or 10 years past its manufacture date, even if it still seems fine, since the sensor degrades regardless of use. Older ionisation or non-interconnected alarms need upgrading to interconnected photoelectric units to meet the standard.

What a certificate of compliance shows

What's the difference between testing, cleaning and replacing an alarm?

Testing confirms the alarm sounds when pressed. Cleaning clears the dust and insects that trigger false alarms. Replacement is needed when an alarm is faulty, damaged, or over 10 years old. A compliance visit does whichever is required and certifies the result.

How do I know when my alarms are 10 years old?

The manufacture date is printed on the back. If it's close to 10 years, or unreadable, we'll check on site. See the 10-year rule explained.

Do you certify alarms other electricians installed?

Yes, regardless of who fitted them. If the alarms don't meet the interconnected photoelectric standard, we'll quote the upgrade before doing anything.
